"Dear Prof. XXX, I had a question regarding...." 為什麼用had?
從前有在美國念書的朋友問過我，有一次他在B-School做group project 時，他的partner寫了一封e-mail問教授問題，在CCed的e-mail裡他的partner 寫道 "Dear Prof. XXX, Cathy and I had a question regarding..." 他心中好奇為什麼是 "had a question" 這樣不是代表「從前有的疑問 (而現在已經沒有疑問)」？
答: 這種過去式，我自己將它稱作「禮貌性過去式」。其實大家不是沒有學過，在從前大家都學過 Could/Would you 比 Can/Will you 有禮貌，但原因很多人不清楚，用死背的方法學習。其實原因跟這次的 "had" 是一樣的。當在making requests /asking questions 時，利用時間的差距，過去式可以製造與對方「距離變遠」的感覺，因此可減少 "face-threatening effect" （就跟有些話當面不敢說反而用Line 好講). 因此在這個狀況中，Cathy and I had 跟 Cathy and I have 是一樣的意思，兩者問題都仍然存在。這跟有人寫 I was wondering if you could....是一樣的道理。
